Objectives

  • Analyse existing transportation flows of food products in urban areas, selecting data from representative cities like London, Milan, Athens, Frankfurt, Berlin and other urban areas across Europe
  • Identify opportunities for consolidating transportation flows in this context and define collaboration practices and alternative logistics pooling strategies with the objective to reduce the environmental impacts and the transportation cost
  • Measure the impact of the identified practices and strategies, via comparative analysis, financial assessment and simulation experimentation, and evaluate alternative policies based on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) addressing adverse economic, environmental and social effects
  • Involve market stakeholders in a collaborative discussion through focus groups, in-depth interviews, surveys and brainstorming workshops, with the objective to assess organizational and other barriers behind the proposed supply chain collaboration practices and suggest new business models for consolidation scheme
  • Design and implement a simulation tool to quantify the impact of alternative logistics sharing choices from both an efficiency (cost), effectiveness (service level) and environmental perspectiv
  • Design and implement a collaboration platform for supporting information sharing and the creation of appropriate logistics sharing partnerships between food companies and retail outlets with respect to their transportation needs
  • Conduct pilots applying representative collaborative proposals in practice (real-life scenarios) in order to demonstrate the applicability, the value and the effectiveness of the proposed initiative
  • Propose a set of guidelines (roadmap) to support organisations to plan collaborative transport operations towards more efficient and green urban food logistics, based on the results of economic and behavioural modelling and the assessment of partnerships and stakeholder engagement, materialized through interaction with industry stakeholders and the project pilots
